China Defends New Map, India Protests

China on Wednesday defended its release of a new map that shows all of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin, and the entire South China Sea as part of Chinese territory.

The map, which was released by the Ministry of Natural Resources, was met with a strong protest from India, which said it was a "serious violation" of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the map was a "routine practice" and asked India to "refrain from over-interpreting" it.

"It is a routine practice for China to exercise sovereignty in accordance with the law," he said. "We hope the relevant side can stay objective and calm, and refrain from over interpreting."

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the government was "very clear about what is our territory" and that "making absurd claims does not make other people's territories yours."

He said India would continue to "take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The release of the new map comes at a time of heightened tensions between China and India over their disputed border. The two countries have been locked in a standoff in the Ladakh region since 2020, and there have been several clashes between their troops.

The new map is likely to further complicate relations between the two countries.
